Leaving Office 365

I finally made the switch.

I’ve left Office 365 and now use Filen for cloud storage and Office Professional Plus 2024 for desktop applications.

Cost was a driver in my decision

Since I wasn't using all the bells and whistles, the recurring subscription for Office 365 was getting too expensive. Switching to a one-time Office Professional Plus 2024 purchase and Filen's competitive storage pricing will save me money within 12 months.

Privacy was another major factor

I was increasingly uncomfortable with the idea that my data could be accessible to Microsoft or third parties. Filen's zero-knowledge encryption gives me more peace of mind. I know only I hold the decryption key and control my data entirely.

Of course, the transition wasn't completely seamless. I had to adjust to using separate applications for storage and document editing. There was a slight learning curve getting used to Filen's interface, but it was pretty intuitive. I also had to ensure all my essential files were transferred correctly and encrypted.

Honestly, I'm pleased with the change. While I occasionally miss some of Office 365's integrated features, the cost savings and increased privacy are well worth it. Using Office Professional Plus 2024 obviously feels familiar, and Filen has been reliable and easy to use. This combination works much better for my needs and budget.

Deals

Look around online for Office Professional Plus 2024. I managed to get a 3 PC deal that included MS Project for only about €30.

Filen currently offers a lifetime deal of about €30 for 100 GB, which you can stack to get 200 GB, 300 GB, etc. You can also get a 10 GB free lifetime deal to try the service.

Alternatives

LibreOffice is a free, open-source application that processes documents, spreadsheets, presentations, and other files and is compatible with Microsoft Office files.

pCloud has a try-for-free storage option, and pricing plans start at £50 per year for 500 GB and lifetime plans starting at £199 for 500 GB.

Mega has a 20 GB storage “get started with our free plan”, plus several storage options.

Sync storage starts at $5 per month for 200 GB
