Video Editing On A Budget: There Are Some Amazing Free Applications Available

Video Editing on a Budget
Video editing is no longer an exclusive skill for creative tech gurus.
Whether you're a vlogger seeking to improve your YouTube content, a small business looking to create attention-grabbing ads or just someone who enjoys crafting videos for fun, there's a range of free video editing software to help you polish your clips without breaking the bank.
Here are some top picks with their key features, pros, and cons.
Lightworks
Lightworks has been around for over 25 years and is recognised in the filmmaker's world. This software was even used in big Hollywood productions such as Pulp Fiction and The Wolf of Wall Street.
Pros: It supports various video formats, allows multicam editing, and has rich editing tools. Notably, it has one of the most robust free versions available – you'll receive access to a wide range of professional quality tools that can make your clips genuinely shine.
Cons: Its interface might be overwhelming for inexperienced users due to its professional-grade features. Also, the free version only allows exports to 720p resolution, restricting the full HD capability to its paid version.
HitFilm Express
For people interested in blending special effects with video editing, HitFilm Express is the right choice. This application boasts video editing capabilities and VFX tools – a rare feature set amongst free software.
Pros: It can manage 3D effects, has a comprehensive range of tools, and even includes tutorials for beginners.
Cons: To unlock its more professional tools and features, you may consider purchasing a paid subscription.
DaVinci Resolve
DaVinci Resolve is a professional calibre video editing software offering a free version. It has emerged as a genuine competitor in the video editing market and is now used by video professionals worldwide.
Pros: The free version packs a punch with advanced colour correction and audio editing features. It provides multi-user collaboration, making it perfect for team projects.
Cons: Although it can handle various formats, it might struggle with larger video files. Its advanced features may also seem daunting to beginners.
iMovie (Mac Only)
iMovie is a classic choice for Mac users. It's user-friendly, offers beautiful templates, and produces high-quality end products.
Pros: iMovie allows you to edit on your iPad or iPhone, making it great for editing on the go. It also offers enough functionality to create a basic but professional-looking video.
Cons: It only works on Apple products, and its features may not suffice for someone after complex editing functions.
OpenShot
One of the most well-known free video editing applications is my app of choice, OpenShot.
This open-source software offers powerful and versatile editing features for beginners and experienced editors. With a simple and intuitive interface, OpenShot allows users to easily import, trim, and arrange video clips on the timeline.
Pros:
OpenShot supports a wide range of video formats, including popular ones like MP4, MOV, and AVI, making it convenient for users to work with several types of footage
It offers a collection of transition effects, such as fade in/out, dissolve, and zoom, to enhance the visual appeal of your videos
OpenShot provides advanced features like keyframe animation, allowing users to create smooth and professional-looking animations
The application supports multi-track editing, enabling users to work with multiple layers of video, audio, and images simultaneously
OpenShot has a vast library of free tutorials and documentation available, making it easy to learn and master the software
Cons:
Despite its numerous features, OpenShot can be resource-intensive and may require a powerful computer to run smoothly
While OpenShot is compatible with both Mac and Windows, it lacks official support for Linux systems, which may be a drawback for some users
The stability of the software can sometimes be an issue, with occasional crashes and performance hiccups
OpenShot may lack some of the advanced features found in professional-grade editing software, limiting the capabilities of more experienced editors
Final Thoughts
Many free video editing applications that cater to diverse needs and skill levels are available.
I‘ve found OpenShot a reliable and versatile option, with its user-friendly interface and advanced features.
However, I used to use DaVinci Resolve. I found it an excellent choice but for more professional and collaborative projects.
The best free video editing software will depend on your specific requirements and preferences. It's essential to explore and evaluate different options to find the perfect fit.
