Recent Events
I attended the Dundee and Angus Chamber of Commerce Dunhill Business Breakfast at the Carnoustie Golf Hotel. It was great to hear about sustainability at events from Philip Russell, the Managing Director at Bluewater. I then ventured onto the course for a couple of hours to watch the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship.
Productivity
As recently discussed in a previous newsletter, with no apparent step change in productivity on the horizon, my focus has been on reducing the time spent on the day-to-day tasks that clutter my day. Improvements range from using new software to reduce the effort to new hardware to speed up and simplify workflows.
This approach has reduced my working day for repetitive tasks from 5 to 6 hours to 2 hours in the morning, leaving more time to think and develop strategies for the future, as well as releasing time to network and help others with social media and content marketing products and services.
Hardware and Applications
Here are some applications and hardware currently in my toolkit and being used to focus on productivity and efficiency improvements.
Hardware
New Mouse
My mouse died!
After some thought, I decided I don't need a wireless mouse - after all, it never leaves my desk.
I started searching for mouse reviews and came across the Logitech G203. Primarily a gaming mouse, it came within budget - ok, I didn't have one, but at under £14, so it was a bargain.
It has customisable RGB lighting and 6 programmable buttons. I haven't used the programmable buttons; I stayed with the standard arrangement, which includes the forward and back web page buttons on the left-hand side - very handy, and improves productivity ever so slightly!
Software
A Screenshot Application
There are a vast number of screenshot applications available, from simple Chrome extensions to fully paid-for applications.
My recommendation is for ShareX. It's a free app, but you can (and should) donate to help with ongoing and future development.
ShareX goes way past the Windows Snipping Tool, offering a range of features from screen capture and recording to many sharing options and scrolling page capture, and it can even grab text from images.
It can be a bit fiddly to set up and has an old-school look that, for some, can be unappealing. But you need to get away from the style and focus on the fantastic benefits of the features - they're powerful.
